About Me

Hello there!

How to start, uhm....

Well,
I'm currently living in Málaga, Andalucia, and I have just started my psychology degree.
While I'm doing that, I'm in the port selling ceramics and I'm also learnign languages in a school :)

I've work with children as a volunteer in Sicily for a while (I was spanish teacher and I worked in a host house) Then I've become a basic chess teacher, for children as well, that's why I remained there almost 2 years!

Music is a very important thing in my life, heheheee
I like to sing very much, mostly jazz, soul, gospel, rock... but I'm open to every kind of it! I also love to play intruments, to create new stuff and improvise with people, in double voice and with whatever instruments we have!! (I like to dance too, even though I dont't know much how to move properly ...) I let you imagine.

I like to engage in interesting conversations with people... and if it is in other languages, all the better, as I believe that learning other languages helps us to broaden our inner world and to promote interculturality. I speak English, Italian, some French and I'm about to start German ! We can always share funny words :)

I love literature and I also like to write poetry and short stories.

I like sports very much, both physical and mental. I like to play chess and I really love to run, doing weights, yoga and whatever involves working out and developing motor/ mental skils! I'd love to learn surfing (apart from the Couch, bum dum tssss

I like nature very much! observing fauna (humans included) and flora.

An important fact about me is that I love to ask questions about almost everything.

I don't usually use social media, but here is my instagram account: @marta_rosas_

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Well...
This is a long story that I will try to summarize: the story of my first adventure abroad.

Once, back in 2018, I decided to go to work in Genoa, Italy, as a temporary nanny for two months. For personal reasons, I decided to quit, because at that moment in my life I felt completely lost and more than a salary what I needed was to disappear for a while from the face of the earth.

I remember that day saying goodbye to the children I was looking after. With my big red suitcase I walked down the stairs to the promenade, in a beautiful sunset, where a former sailor sat next to me and asked me with a smile: What are you doing here all alone?

To which I stammered in almost made-up Italian: I'M 18 YEARS OLD, I HAVE JUST QUIT MY JOB, I DON'T KNOW ANYONE IN THIS COUNTRY AND I DON'T EVEN HAVE THE MONEY TO PAY FOR A NIGHT IN A HOSTEL.

The sailor and I spoke in sign language. He didn't understand anything I tried to say, as he didn't speak English either. I will say that he was very nice, the gentleman with the mermaid tattoo.

Determined to continue with my plan of solitude, the first night, after walking a bit around that maritime city of endless slopes (with my heavy suitcase, my arms remember), I found a small and cosy boat on the beach, and decided to spend the night under it.

I remember not crying, but to tell the truth I was scared when I was trying to sleep and that rat ran over my head.

Then: a light bulb.

Technological, I picked up my phone and searched on YouTube: How to travel without money? I saw a 20-minute Tedtalk where they named the application that would save my life on this occasion and, apparently, on many others. Thank you, blessed CS community!

By the next day I had someone to take me in and it was the start of one of the most exciting adventure of my life. I ended up meeting a lot of people: I worked with a Mexican guy in a bancarella, making macramé. I got together with some musicians and as they saw that I needed money, they gave me a guitar (as a gift) so that I could sing in the street like them (that's how I paid for my dinners). Then I ended up in a godforsaken village in the middle of nature, with its river of charm, because a old lady let me live for a month in an abandoned house she had in Vobbia, on the condition that I cleaned it.

There are many details that I won't say here, but of course I have to mention Stefano, who was the last person who hosted me in his house with CouchSurfing on that trip. Stefano has become one of my best friends and we still talk to each other every week. The 10 days I spent with him were completely magical, in the middle of nature, in his house in Neirone. We ate delicious food, laughed a lot, had incredible conversations and even had time to record a couple of songs, which we still listen to, with great affection. I go to visit him every 2 years.

Having told this very short story, I can say that I overcame depression by living without money and using this app. I have not been happier than when I only had to worry about where to sleep at night and what to eat during the day. This experience completely changed the way I now see the world and experience people.

I think the proposal that Couch Surfing makes is very important for people who don't have a lot of money, but what we do have is an immense curiosity to know the world around us: CS helps the democratisation of culture.

I think it is important for our lives to go on an adventure and, as good nomads, to leave our comfort zone in order to evolve as individuals. Always with respect for nature and humanity at the forefront.

Personally, I want to dedicate myself to education and health issues professionally and I dream of, in the future, empowering my girls and boys to travel, alone or accompanied, to learn many languages, to read, to ask questions and to dream. To dream big!
And realistically, yes... CS is a beautiful reality, isn't it?
